Yukoners are being encouraged to Get Caught With Your Shirt On, as the Whitehorse 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) Host Society launches its Games Day Friday program.
Every second Friday, running through February, local businesses and their staff will have the chance to win prizes and a visit from the official 2020 AWG mascot, Däch’äw. Games Day Friday (GDF) crews will be hitting the streets on the lookout for those wearing their AWG gear.
Businesses also have the opportunity to participate in a monthly decorating contest, where they can win lunch for their office by highlighting components of the AWG.
“In just over six months we’ll be hosting nearly 2,000 participants in Whitehorse, and Games Day Friday is another way to share the excitement of the 2020 Arctic Winter Games with the community,” said George Arcand, President of the 2020 AWG Host Society. “It encourages us to celebrate the spirit of the Games while promoting the high level of athletic competition, and the unique artistic performances.”
As part of the promotion, Sports Experts created a special Games Day Friday t-shirt for businesses to order. All proceeds from sales of those t-shirts will go directly to the 2020 AWG, with $1 from each purchase being donated to a ticket fund for youth who can’t afford to attend the Games. The tickets will be distributed through Sport Yukon’s Kids Recreation Fund.
“Games Day Friday is a great way for Yukoners and local businesses to show their support for the Games and generate excitement as we get set to host athletes from across the North,” said John Streicker, Minister of Community Services.
“We are proud and honored to support the Games Day Friday program. It’s a great opportunity for our staff to raise awareness of the Games and we look forward to welcoming everyone to our beautiful community next March,” said Mayor Dan Curtis.
Businesses in other Yukon communities will also be able to take part in Games Day Friday. Sports Experts and the 2020 AWG Host Society have created an online shopping site, with shipping available worldwide. More details will be available as the site goes live.
Once the Games gear has been purchased, participants are asked to post photos on their social media accounts tagging AWG and using the GDF hashtags:
The AWG 2020 team will be following along online, re-tweeting posts and interacting with participants. Social media posts about GDF will increase the businesses’ chance of winning prizes.
The 2020 Arctic Winter Games will be held March 15 to 21, 2020 in Whitehorse.
