The Whitehorse 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG 2020) officially welcomed the Commissioner of Yukon as an Honorary Patron of the Games on Friday.
Commissioner Angelique Bernard presented a certificate to the President of the Host Society, George Arcand, “in recognition of (AWG 2020’s) positive contributions to Yukon individuals and communities, and the good works they promote”. As a Patron, the Commissioner will lend support and provide recognition leading up to and during the Games.
“I am honoured to be a Patron of the 50th year of the Arctic Winter Games and I look forward to attending as many competitions and events as possible during Games week,” said Commissioner Bernard. “The Games are an excellent way to showcase the wonderful hospitality that Yukon is renowned for. Thank you to the Host Society and all the volunteers for planning a great celebration of sports and culture.”
Whitehorse will host 2,000 participants from nine contingents for the Games, March 15 to 21. AWG 2020 will feature competition in 21 sports, as well as a Cultural Festival, Gala and Arts Market.
“We are pleased to have the Commissioner of Yukon as a Patron of the 2020 Arctic Winter Games,” said Arcand. “Commissioner Bernard is a strong advocate for sport in the Yukon and is constantly supportive of community events, so we believe this role is a great fit. You may have seen her already at various AWG events, so today’s announcement only confirms her commitment.”
With AWG 2020 just over three months away, Super Passes are now available at the AWG office and Whitehorse City Hall, as well as online through the official merchandise site: shop.awg2020.org. Tickets for the Gold Medal hockey games and the Opening Ceremony also went on sale this week, available at the AWG office and City Hall only.
