February 22, 2018 (Whitehorse, YT) – A familiar face will be in charge of the Arctic Winter Games when they return to Whitehorse in 2020.Moira Lassen has accepted the position of general manager, the 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) Host Society announced today. Lassen will be making the move back to the Yukon after several years overseas.
“After ten years of professional commitments in Ottawa, Great Britain, Samoa and Australia, I’m delighted to return to what I refer to as home – Whitehorse, Yukon,” said Lassen. “The Arctic Winter Games hold an extremely special place in my heart and I am looking forward to working alongside President Arcand and the AWG 2020 Host Society leadership to ensure others share the same passion.”
Lassen has worked within the Canadian and international sport systems for the past few decades, in a variety of leadership, administrative, coaching and officiating positions in both multi-sport and sport specific capacities. It is in the male dominated sport of Olympic Weightlifting where Lassen has had a leading impact, due to her elected positions as Secretary General of the Canadian Weightlifting Federation and a variety of leadership roles within the International Weightlifting Federation. She was the first woman ever elected to the Executive Board, with voting rights, in the history of the sport.
Lassen’s tenure in multi-sport games includes various roles with the Whitehorse 2004 Canada Senior Games, London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, as well as International Games Advisor at the Samoa 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games.
“I am thrilled that Moira Lassen will be joining the Arctic Winter Games 2020 host society as general manager,” said Yukon Minister of Community Services, John Streicker. “As the first woman ever elected to the executive board of the International Weightlifting Federation, Moira is a trailblazer and has extensive experience in the sport community. She has had roles in countless multi-sport events, including the Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games. Moira brings passion and athlete-centered focus to her role with the host society, and I look forward to welcoming her back to the Yukon and in working together to make the 2020 Games the best ever.”

As general manager, Lassen will be responsible for the overall planning, organization, co-ordination, control and staging of all 2020 AWG operations and employees.
“I’ve worked with Moira previously at Sport Yukon, as well as during the 2004 Canada Senior Games, and I’m really looking forward to working with her again,” said Host Society President George Arcand. “The 2020 Games Host Society is coming together very well, and I have no doubt Moira will a great addition to the team as we build key partnerships for 2020, focusing on sport development for our athletes while promoting our community culture and values.”
Whitehorse will welcome more than 2,000 athletes, participants and mission staff to the territory in March of 2020 for the Arctic Winter Games. This year’s Games will take place in Hay River and Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, March 18-24.
