Yukon musician Daniel Ashley and his production company Dash Music will create the Whitehorse 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) theme song.
His demo track, titled From the North, was chosen by a panel of judges from a selection of submissions earlier this month.
“All of the submissions we received from Yukon artists were fantastic, and the panel did a great job choosing a theme song that really reflects the Arctic Winter Games spirit of sport, community and culture,” says Moira Lassen, General Manager of the 2020 Arctic Winter Games. “We’re excited to hear the finished version from Dash, and we’re confident that the theme song will be a huge hit with participants as well as the community.”
The lyrics of From the North were composed by Daniel Ashley (Dash) and Blake Lepine of the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers, with Whitehorse youth artist Emily Ross providing vocals on the track. The final version will feature a variety of instruments and vocal styles from across the Circumpolar North.
Dash says the title From the North is focused on the idea that northerners share a connection created by our geography.
“This connection also honors our cultural diversity and heritage across the North. The goal is to create a moving fusion of northern voices that inspires all participants of the Arctic Winter Games.”
The panel of judges for the theme song selection was comprised of industry representatives, Music Yukon members, and members of the 2020 Arctic Winter Games Host Society. The final version of the theme song will be released to the public at the AWG 1-year-out celebration in March.
