How long have you been involved with the Arctic Winter Games, and in what capacity?

1972 was my first year in the Arctic Winter Games, playing basketball when the Games were in Whitehorse.

Tell me about one of your best experiences.

Winning the silver medal for curling…I remember in our very first game we were up against the Alaskan ladies. We were very intimidated. All four of our Ross River players (combined) didn’t have as many years of curling experience as one of the Alaskans. After a few ends, when the score was something like 13 – 0, the official came over to tell us we were not obligated to play the full game and we could quit any time we wanted to. But we said, “No, we’ll stick it out.”, knowing that the practice would be good for us. At the end we managed a silver medal!

What keeps you involved after so many years, and in what capacity will you volunteer in 2020?

We are so fortunate to live in the Yukon and have so many opportunities.  I volunteer because I would like to give back to our community so our young folks can enjoy the world of sports.

In 2020 I’m registered for officiating at the curling club, but I’m available for anything else.

What words of encouragement do you have for people who might be thinking of volunteering?

How much fun it is…talk to other past participants and you will see how much you get out of it.
